President Bush offered a brief and half-hearted apology to the Arab world - but he should apologize to the American people for abandoning the Geneva Conventions.

He also owes an apology to the U.S. Army for cavalierly sending them into harm’s way while ignoring the best advice of their commanders.

Perhaps most importantly of all, he should apologize to all those men and women throughout our world who have held the ideal of the United States of America as a shining goal, to inspire their hopeful efforts to bring about justice under a rule of law in their own lands.

Of course, the problem with all these legitimate requests is that a sincere apology requires an admission of error, a willingness to accept responsibility and to hold people accountable.

And President Bush is not only unwilling to acknowledge error. He has thus far been unwilling to hold anyone in his administration accountable for the worst strategic and military miscalculations and mistakes in the history of the United States of America.

He is willing only to apologize for the alleged erratic behavior of a few low-ranking enlisted people, who he is scapegoating for his policy fiasco.

This is one of many reasons why I have decided to do as much as I can to get John Kerry elected. By the way, there is a Kerry Meetup tonight at the Plough and Stars:

What: National Kerry in 2004 Meetup Day
When: Thursday, May 27 @ 7PM
Who: Kerry Supporters and friends
Where: Plough & Stars
116 Clement Street @ 2nd Ave
San Francisco, CA 94118
415-751-1122

Hope to see you there!

I have to admit this is the first time I’ve been seriously pissed off at an elected official, but I am totally freakin’ pissed at the way Rumsfeld has been handling the situation in Iraq. We are in some serious shit. This is like Israel all over again. How long before we announce a permanent military base in Iraq?

At least the administration could say, “well we knew there where no WMD, but Hussein was bad. He tortured his people.” Then what the hell do we do? We throw citizens in jail by the thousands and mentally and physical torture them to the point where they “pass away.” I am so embarrassed for this country that I love. I don’t want to see these few people in this administration totally fuck up a good thing.

Nevada, with our mere 5 electoral votes, is a swing state. Maybe we could actually make a difference here.

I completely agree with what you are saying. I found that a good portion of the people at the Kerry Meetup weren’t exactly huge supporters of Kerry, but instead were animatedly against Bush.

The swing states are very, very important. It’s also pretty important to focus on the House and try to win back some Democratic seats.

    Anyway…
