The value of a good todo list…

I was talking with Christopher this past weekend about how he tries to get one task done each day. He claims this makes him more productive than most people on average. After this week at work I am starting to agree with him, and beginning to think this may be a good practice.

Now my task on Monday took me way longer than I expected, I didn’t reach home from work until 10:45 PM. But the rest of the week has been smooth and on schedule. I have to say I would be totally lost with out my todo list. It literally has everything I need to accomplish at work, if someone were to delete it I would be totally lost. The great thing about this approach is you can see your progress, once I finish a task it is marked done and move to the bottom of the list. I’ve also noticed that this has lowered my stress level since I know I have everything I need to do written down and that there is nothing I’m forgetting.

Now I haven’t exactly stuck to just one task a day. But, I force myself to do at least one task. It give me a good feeling of forward momentum.

That reminds me, I should be my car serviced. Better add that to the list. ;)

I keep mine on a Post-It attached to my monitor so I can always see what I need to do and what I’ve done. Even if I can’t get everything on there, it helps prevent me from feeling so overwhelmed.

I have to have mine in electronic form. I’d be too worried the Post-it would loose it sticky-ness, fall off of the monitor and land on my chair. Then the next thing you know my Todo list is attached to my butt and I’m the laughing stock of the office! Then again I’ve been known to be a bit paranoid. ;)
