Napa Weekend

This past weekend was spent in Napa to attend my friends Peter and Mercedes wedding. Initially the plan was to just drive up for the wedding itself, but at the last minute I decided on making a full weekend of it. Here are some of the highlights:

Time to ski…

I drove up to Tahoe the other night to hang out with Christopher. Last night was spent drinking beer and hacking on a side project we have been working on together. More about that in later posts…

But right now, we are headed out to spend some time on the slopes. Snow has been coming down pretty steadily all morning, so we should be able to get in some good turns.

Now playing: Tom Waits – Chocolate Jesus

Does it get better with age?

Have you ever noticed that sometimes when uncork a bottle of wine the first sip doesn’t taste all that hot, but by the third mug it starts to seem a bit sophisticated. Now…

Has the wine opened up, or have I just tied one on?

Who’s up for a Latte?

The reason why I got sucked into Amazon Prime the other day was due to the fact I broke the glass for Nicole’s cafe froth thingy. Amazon had it for $7.99, and with Prime I already have it in my mitts. I just love the instant gratification of online shopping. So tonight Cafe Solis is back in business, man I’ve been jonesin’ for a cappuccino the past couple of nights!

Happy Hour at Zeitgeist…

The weather in San Francisco over the past couple of days has been steller. I’m talking 80 degrees and sunny, and it’s only March 11th folks. Not to worry, the fog has rolled in tonight so we’ll be back to our normal 60′s temps for the weekend.

Anyway, after spending a good portion of the day working from home and staring out the window at the crystal blue sky, I decided it was time to get out of the house for a drink. Ji suggested Zeitgeist for happy hour. It’s pretty much known as a biker / bike messenger bar located in the Mission. Far as I know it’s has the largest backyard garden area, which is clutch on days like today. As you can see from the pictures this place fills right up, and begins to look like a large house party. And by the time we left it pretty much was, most people were half in the bag and hooking up with complete strangers. Even though over 80% of them have tattoos, they tend to be a rather friendly bunch.

Well it’s rather hard to complain about a place which sells $10 pitchers of beer and a excellent BBQ burgers with home fries for a messily $6. Just make sure you get there early, on nice days like today you may find yourself in a line out front waiting to get in!

I Love Coffee!

Why?! Well that’s simple, I able to function on only 3 hours of sleep!

Now you may ask why I only have 3 hours sleep. Well that also is simple, and if you are a hacker I’m sure you’ve had this experience more than once in your life and most likely in the past couple of weeks.

You are up against a hard bug and need to ship the product soon. So you spend until 11:30 pm trying to fix it before you give up and decide that you are doing more damage than good. So now it’s time to make the 45 minute commute home on the 280. Half way home you come up with what could be the fix, so once you get home you jot it down and decide it’s probably better for you to get some sleep and fix the bug in the AM. Well guess what? Your mind says, “Dude, you think I’m going to let you sleep? No way, you are going to think about this until you fix it” I hate when my mind does this to me! So yes you get out of bed and try your fix! Well this time mine didn’t work and kept me up until 2pm in the process. Now I’m supper pissed and need to get some Zs, so I try to crawl back in bed. Of course my mind is still spinning and the only way to solve this problem is a heavy dosage of the mind melting Boob Tube! It worked perfectly until I woke up the fantastic “Girl Gone Wild” DVD infommercial at 5am, of course I couldn’t make it back to sleep. So it’s back to trying to fix the bug, before I know it’s 7am and time to take a shower and leave for work.

This is where my friend the Glorious Coffee Bean comes in clutch. Man, I love that bean!

Lunch at Fry’s

So my co-workers like to eat on the cheap. Each day they come by my cube around noon, that’s when I instantly ask, “Where are you going?”. Typically, it’s some Asian fast food place where you can get a large bowl or plate of rice with some sort of cooked meat and sauce thrown on it for about $4. The key here is not to ask what the meat actually is.

Anyway, today the answer was Fry’s. Well if you aren’t in the know, Fry’s is an electronic store. It use to be a grocery store back in the day, but now it caters to the uber-computer geek. You can go in pick up a huge bag of candy, a new OEM hard drive wwithout packaging, and a Playboy on your way out to the check out line. Since I had to pick up some blank CD-Rs today, I though what the heck and went along.

I chose a roast beef sandwich which was fine, but I was expecting a good deal. I don’t consider $5 exactly a deal, especially since I use to get a superb half sandwich and chips at Mr. Pickles for under $5. Long story short, don’t go to an electronic store for lunch!

Food coma setting in…

Even though tomorrow is going to be my last day at Virage, we all decided that today would be the day to go our for the obligatory going away lunch.

We decided on Naan-N-Curry. I feel this is probably the best non-fancy Indian food restaurant chain in the San Francisco. If you are looking for a nice sit down restaurant, then you can’t beat Indian Oven, in the Lower Haight. But, if you are looking for great, quick, cheap Indian food than look no further than Naan-N-Curry.

How cheap is it? Well there were 12 of us and the bill came to a grand whopping total $65. Not too shabby if you ask me!

Good breakfast…

Being the first day back in Austin, I felt it was necessary to take Nicole over to a favorite breakfast place of mine, Magnolia. I really can’t tell you how many times I had eaten here over the year or so that I live in Austin, this was mainly due to the fact we usually hit it after a full night of drinking, which most of the time I wasn’t the one driving. With it’s hip wait staff, good coffee, and decent cheep food, Magnolia is hard to beat! It was exactly as I remembered and a great start on the day!

How do you define a good lunch?

How does a 21 mile bike ride followed by a Mr. Pickles sandwich sound?! Well if you have had one of these sandwiches before you know that is just hits the spot!
